Jhumkas for Kurti
A kurti and a pair of jhumkas is the most dependable outfit in Indian wardrobes: college, office, a lunch out, a temple visit. But not every jhumka suits every kurti. Size, finish and how busy the print is all decide whether the jhumkas finish the outfit or fight it.
Here's how to choose, with our kurti-matched edit linked throughout.
Size: match the jhumka to the neckline
The neckline is the single best guide to jhumka size, because it decides how much empty space sits between your ears and your collarbone.
| Kurti neckline | Jhumka size | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mandarin / band collar | Large, 5 cm drop or more | The high collar leaves space only at the ears, so make them count |
| Round neck | Medium, 3–5 cm | Balanced, everyday proportion |
| Boat neck | Medium to large | A wide neckline pairs well with wide bells |
| V neck or angrakha | Small to medium, or chandbali-style | Lets the V be the focus |
| Collared shirt-style kurti | Small studs-with-bell or mini jhumkas | Keeps it smart, not costume |
Drop length (top of hook to bottom of bell) is listed on every product page so you can compare.
Print: busy kurti, simpler jhumka
- Solid or pastel kurtis: the perfect canvas for detailed oxidised jhumkas with peacock, floral, ghungroo or layered-bell designs.
- Bold block prints and Ajrakh: choose jhumkas with clean domes and fewer layers. A plain oxidised bell or a coin jhumka holds its own without clashing.
- Chikankari and threadwork: delicate embroidery suits delicate jhumkas. Pick small oxidised or pearl-drop jhumkas in silver-tone.
- Mirror work: mirrors already sparkle. Go matte with oxidised finishes and avoid stone-heavy pieces.
Finish: oxidised, gold-tone or stone-set?
Oxidised jhumkas are the all-rounder for cotton, khadi, linen and indigo or earthy colours. They are the most common choice for daily kurtis.
Gold-tone jhumkas suit festive silk kurtis, jewel colours (emerald, ruby, royal blue) and anything with zari.
Kundan-meena jhumkas add colour. Match one enamel colour to your kurti or dupatta for an easy, pulled-together look.
AD (American diamond) jhumkas give evening sparkle and work best with georgette or silk kurta sets for parties.
Weight and comfort for all-day wear
A kurti look is usually worn all day, so weight matters.
- Under 10 g per pair: fine from 9 am to 9 pm.
- 10–25 g: typical medium-to-large oxidised jhumkas; comfortable for a few hours.
- Over 25 g: wear with an ear chain (sahara) to support the lobe, or save for short events.
Where we have the weight, we list it on the product page.
Kurti style by kurti style
Straight kurti with jeans: medium oxidised jhumkas and a few bangles. Skip the necklace.
A-line kurti with palazzos: larger jhumkas with ghungroo detailing balance the flare.
Anarkali: chandbali-jhumka hybrids or layered jhumkas in gold-tone or kundan for festive wear.
Short kurti or tunic: small hoop-jhumkas or mini bells keep it casual.
Kurta set with dupatta: match the jhumka finish to the dupatta border rather than the kurti body.
A few other tips
- Wear hair back or in a low bun to show off big jhumkas; leave it open with small ones.
- One oxidised ring or a thin bangle stack completes the look. A heavy necklace with big jhumkas is usually one piece too many.
- If you wear glasses, medium jhumkas sit better than very wide ones near the frame arms.
About our jhumkas
Our jhumkas are imitation jewellery: brass or other alloys with oxidised, silver-tone or gold-tone finishes, with glass or synthetic stones and beads where shown. We list the material on each product page and don't make silver, nickel-free or hypoallergenic claims. Keep them dry and stored in a pouch; our Care Guide explains how.

Frequently asked questions
Which jhumkas go with a plain kurti? Detailed oxidised jhumkas with peacock, floral or ghungroo work. A plain kurti gives intricate designs room to stand out.
Can I wear jhumkas with a kurti and jeans? Yes. Medium oxidised jhumkas with a straight kurti and jeans is a classic smart-casual Indo-western look.
Should I wear a necklace with jhumkas and a kurti? Usually not. Jhumkas are the focal point, so add a ring or bangles instead. With a deep V neckline, a very fine chain can work.
Are heavy jhumkas bad for ears? Very heavy earrings worn for long periods can stretch the lobe. Choose lighter pairs for all-day wear, or use an ear chain for support.
What size jhumka should I buy for daily wear? A drop of about 3–5 cm and a weight under about 15 g per pair is comfortable for most people all day.
