Size and Fit Guide
Most of our earrings, necklaces with adjustable thread (dori) and many rings fit everyone. Bangles and fixed-size rings need the right size. The tables below show standard Indian sizes; always check the size or measurement on the product page, because designs vary slightly.
Bangles
Indian bangle sizes are written as 2.2, 2.4, 2.6 and so on. The number after the point is sixteenths of an inch, so size 2.4 means an inner diameter of 2 and 4/16 inches.
| Bangle size | Inner diameter (mm) | Inner diameter (inches) | Usually fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.2 | 54.0 | 2.125 | Girls and very slim wrists |
| 2.3 | 55.6 | 2.188 | Slim hands |
| 2.4 | 57.2 | 2.250 | Small to medium hands (a common size) |
| 2.5 | 58.7 | 2.313 | Medium hands |
| 2.6 | 60.3 | 2.375 | Medium hands (the most common adult size) |
| 2.7 | 61.9 | 2.438 | Medium to large hands |
| 2.8 | 63.5 | 2.500 | Large hands |
| 2.9 | 65.1 | 2.563 | Large hands |
| 2.10 | 66.7 | 2.625 | Extra-large hands |
Odd sizes (2.3, 2.5, 2.7, 2.9) are less common. Many designs come only in even sizes.
How to find your bangle size
Method 1: Measure a bangle that already fits (most accurate)
- Pick a rigid bangle that slides over your hand comfortably and doesn't fall off too easily.
- Lay it flat and measure straight across the inside, edge to edge, at the widest point, in millimetres.
- Find the closest diameter in the table. If you fall between two sizes, choose the larger one.
Method 2: Measure your hand
- Bring your thumb and little finger together, as you do when putting on a bangle.
- Wrap a strip of paper or thread around the widest part of your hand, across the knuckles.
- Mark where it meets, then measure the length in mm. This is your hand circumference.
- Divide by 3.14 to get the diameter, and add 2–3 mm for comfort. Choose that size, or the next size up.
Example: hand circumference 182 mm ÷ 3.14 = 58 mm, + 2 mm = 60 mm, so size 2.6.
Openable, kada and cuff styles: bangles with a screw or hinge opening, and open-ended cuffs, are more forgiving. Product pages state whether a bangle is rigid, openable or adjustable.
Rings
Many of our oxidised rings are open-backed and adjustable; the product page says so. For fixed-size rings, use the table below.
| Indian size | Inner diameter (mm) | Inner circumference (mm) | US size (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 14.6 | 46 | 4 |
| 8 | 15.3 | 48 | 4¾ |
| 10 | 15.9 | 50 | 5½ |
| 12 | 16.6 | 52 | 6 |
| 14 | 17.2 | 54 | 7 |
| 16 | 17.8 | 56 | 7¾ |
| 18 | 18.5 | 58 | 8½ |
| 20 | 19.1 | 60 | 9 |
| 22 | 19.7 | 62 | 9¾ |
| 24 | 20.4 | 64 | 10½ |
Sizes are approximate; manufacturers vary by up to about half a size.
How to find your ring size
- Using a ring that fits: measure the inside diameter across the centre in mm and match it to the table.
- Using thread or paper: wrap it snugly around the base of the finger you'll wear the ring on, mark the overlap, and measure the length in mm. That is the circumference; match it to the table.
Tips: measure at the end of the day when fingers are warmest, and not when your hands are cold. If your knuckle is much wider than the base of your finger, choose a size between the two measurements. Fingers on your dominant hand are often slightly larger.
Adjusting an open ring
Press the two ends together or ease them apart gently with your fingers, a little at a time. Don't use pliers, and don't adjust the same ring many times: repeated bending can crack plating or weaken the metal.
Necklaces
| Style | Length | Where it sits |
|---|---|---|
| Choker | 30–35 cm (12–14 in) | Snug at the base of the neck |
| Collar / short | 36–41 cm (14–16 in) | Just below the neck, on the collarbone |
| Princess | 43–48 cm (17–19 in) | Just below the collarbone; the most versatile |
| Matinee | 50–60 cm (20–24 in) | Above the bust, good with high necklines |
| Long / opera | 70–90 cm (28–35 in) | Mid-torso, layered or worn long |
Lengths of necklaces with an adjustable dori are given as a range, from fully tightened to fully open.
Matching necklace length to neckline
| Neckline | Try |
|---|---|
| Deep V or sweetheart | Princess or matinee pendant that echoes the V |
| Boat neck or wide round neck (common with saree blouses) | Choker or collar-length statement piece |
| High neck or collar (kurtis, mandarin collar) | Long matinee or opera-length chain over the fabric, or skip the necklace and wear statement earrings |
| Square neck | Collar or choker with a straight or geometric shape |
| Off-shoulder | Choker or short collar necklace |
Earrings: size and weight
Product pages give the drop length (from the top of the hook or stud to the bottom) and, where known, the weight per pair.
- Under 10 g per pair: light enough for all-day office wear.
- 10–25 g: typical jhumkas and chandbalis, comfortable for a few hours.
- Over 25 g: statement pieces. Consider ear chains (sahara), which take some of the weight off the lobe.
